Breathing Statue is the electronic music project of Finnish composer and musician Ilari Halonen, blending hypnotic breakbeats, atmospheric soundscapes, cinematic textures, and aggressive dubstep energy into a deeply personal sonic identity.
Drawing influence from artists and groups such as Kraftwerk, Röyksopp, Virtual Riot, London Elektricity, Au5, and Shpongle — as well as film and game music ranging from experimental electronic scenes to John Williams’ legendary Star Wars scores — Breathing Statue creates music that moves between introspective ambience and explosive rhythmic experimentation.
The project’s name was born from a quiet personal moment: Halonen realized he was sitting in the same chair where his father had once fallen asleep while working, appearing almost like a “breathing statue.” The phrase stayed with him, capturing something both human and surreal — a fitting symbol for music that explores emotion, existence, memory, and identity.
While rooted in dubstep and EDM, Breathing Statue pushes beyond conventional structures by fusing breakbeat-inspired rhythmic movement with cinematic progression and immersive sound design. The result is music that aims not only to energize listeners, but also to create profound and unexpected emotional experiences.
Outside the project, Halonen works professionally as a church musician in Finland, giving Breathing Statue a unique contrast between spiritual musicianship and modern electronic experimentation. The project also reflects themes of resilience, neurodivergent creativity, and the desire to encourage people who feel outside traditional expectations.
Though primarily a studio-focused project so far, Breathing Statue has already appeared live on stage and continues to evolve through new releases and curated collections such as the ongoing “xx mins of Breathing Statue” playlist, which showcases the project’s ever-changing musical world.
